This past week CMA Art Colony kicked off with our bookmaking camp. This 4-day camp was a huge hit and the kids created some fabulous books. In addition to learning to make their own books, children learned to make handmade paper, write stories, and create paper sculptures.


Be A Rockstar

The Rockin’ CMAers gave a live performance to a full stadium at the museum last week. The show was completely sold out and they have received rave reviews in all the hippest periodicals. Fans have been whispering about a possible album release later this summer, as well as an encore performance at the museum in September…


Ice Cream Cone Sculptures

Bright and colorful, full of flavor - these ice cream cones can be eaten, but only with your eyes. Visitors to CMA created a great variety of them with assistance from our Teaching Artists. Visit the museum during Open Hours to participate in one of our fun and creative workshops.


Five Days of Clay

For the last five days I’ve had clay on my mind, and on my clothes, and on my food, and on my books, and on my camera. This movie should explain all. From abstract to figurative to the future to virtual reality to nature; we made clay do it all.


Stripes Picnic on Governors Island

To end the year, the Stripes families journeyed to CMA’s summer home on Governors Island. On a gloomy day they brought a lot of sunshine and energy to the island. The families created rain sticks to chase the rain away then moved inside for music and movement. We tried new yoga moves, danced, sang, and drummed. The day ended with a shared a picnic lunch. We look forward to seeing everyone in October for another year of Stripes!


Calder’s Circus

Calder’s Circus art colony on Governor’s Island met from June 21-June 26th. The students created wire and found object sculptures based on the work of Alexander Calder. They were eager to use a variety of objects and their works have a whimsical quality. The week was filled with hard work and fun antics!


Herbert’s Wormhole

[ June 28, 2009; 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. ] On Sunday June 28, CMA was thrilled to have authors and illustrators Rohitash Ro and Peter Nelson come by to read from their new book, Herbert’s Wormhole. The authors also led the kids in a fun drawing exercise and signed copies of their book!


Landscape Painting on Governors Island

Recently 14 eager and talented students trekked all over the Governors Island to sketch the natural and architectural wonders. They explored drawing and painting in watercolor and acrylic. They also had much fun rolling down hills and running in the grass.

It’s been an awesome week on Governor’s Island. The weather has been blissful and the Intro To Animation Art Colony was sooooo much fun. We made this movie to kick off the season.
