Make Room For Art

03.21.11

We are excited to announce that CMA will be opening a brand new 10,000 square foot museum site at 103 Charlton Street (@ Hudson Street) in the Fall of 2011. This will mean more of everything you love about CMA - more inspired messiness, more opportunities to make art with CMA’s super-talented Teaching Artists, more programs for tweens and teens, a new media lab, bigger and better exhibits, and more free programs. The Permanent Collection: New Acquisitions!

03.17.11

News Bulletin! Join CMA in welcoming the newest addition to our permanent collection of children’s artwork: The Sona Kludjian Collection! These artworks (62 in total) were created during the early 1960s by 8th and 9th grade students of Sona’s at the Wadleigh Junior High School in Harlem. Originally founded in 1903, Wadleigh was the first public high school for girls in New York City and was named after Lydia F. Wadleigh, a vocal proponent of higher education for women. By the time Sona became the school’s art teacher Wadleigh had turned into a co-educational junior high school. In 1993 it was transformed again into a secondary school and is now known as Wadleigh Secondary School for Performing and Visual Arts. As an illustrator, I’m most drawn (sorry, no pun intended) to the story telling abilities of the visual arts. When I was a little girl I would create pages of invented characters, give them names, describe their personalities, map out where they lived, etc.

Drawing and Painting Art Colony

03.08.11

12 young artists carried heavy portfolios away from the Children’s Museum of the Arts on Friday, February 26th. Each had successfully spent midwinter recess at “Spring” Art Colony (we’re a forward-looking folk here at CMA.) Drawing and Painting with Jen Spatz meant serious art study: contour line drawing, self portraiture, color theory… and silliness: tiny tape art, scribble by emotion, rocketship design, m&ms and more!

NYC Drawings Inspired by Art Within Reach - Part 2

03.04.11

Welcome to the second installment of drawing cards created by CMA visitors. These original sketches inspired by the Art Within Reach exhibition vary from street scenes to the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center.

We will continue to share these drawing cards as they come in, so make sure to create your own when you visit the museum!

Join CMA at The Armory Show

The Children’s Museum of the Arts is pleased to announce its participation in the 2011 Armory Show, America’s leading fine art fair devoted to the most important art of the 20th and 21st centuries.

CMA will host two days of artist-led workshops for families and children ages 2-14 on Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6 in the Family Lounge at Pier 92 from 11am - 5pm. CMA’s special hands-on programs include drawing, sculpture and stop-action animation workshops, all based upon the various themes presented at this year’s Armory Show.
