East-West Art Exchange at P.S.124

04.22.11

CMA and P.S.124, The Yung Wing School, are partnering this spring in an East-West Art Exchange and Shadow Puppet Project. Located in the center of Chinatown, these 5th grade Yung Wing students are exploring the dialogue between Eastern and Western art forms and techniques. Focusing on the art of shadow puppetry, students are creating their own characters and practicing traditional performance techniques. As part of the school’s 35 year anniversary, students will continue to create original puppets that tell the story of the school’s founder and legacy, Yung Wing, the first Chinese student to graduate from a U.S. university, Yale College in 1854.

These picturres are from a 2nd grade puppet project at PS 347 The American Sign Language and English Lower School. The puppets represent different NYC street “characters” throughout the boroughs. The project was inspired by CMA’s Art Within Reach exhibition, looking at NYC’s landscape and people in the 1930s and today.

These pictures show 3rd grade students from PS 347 the American Sign Language and English Lower School exploring public art and architecture throughout NYC’s different neighborhoods. The various collage, mosaic and drawing projects are inspired by CMA’s current exhibition of Art Within Reach, which features paintings of NYC scenescapes create ed by NYC children in the 1930s and today.

‘Changing’

04.12.11

CMA animators sprung into Spring Animation Art Colony and blossomed. With a focus on a magician rabbit suffering from spring allergies, an underwater sting, the changing of seasons and a band of horses, these artists created an exceptionally unique and special film. Please enjoy our welcoming of Spring!

Thanks to P.S. 86 for visiting CMA!

This first grade class made amazing collages in our Mixed Media workshop “Yourself in Your City”. This workshop was inspired by our current exhibit “Art Within Reach: From the WPA to the Present” which is a collection of children made artwork depicting NYC in both the 1930’s and today.
