CMA at Henry Street Settlement’s Urban Family Center

05.26.11

This Spring, CMA funded a 6-week long free art program for children living in Henry Street Settlement’s Urban Family Center (UFC), which provides transitional housing for homeless families and survivors of domestic violence and their children. During these workshops, CMA’s Teaching Artists guided children ages 3-15 to explore the art of weaving, print-making and sculpture. The children’s collaborative installations are hung in the Center’s community room where they can continue to be enjoyed by family and UFC staff.

Picasso! Spring Art Colony

05.13.11

The Spring Fine Art Colony aimed it’s gaze at the works of Picasso. We dabbled in color mixing and created our own Blue and Rose Period acrylic paintings. Next we looked at Picasso’s ceramic and sculptural works to inspire our own clay creations. Other projects focused on collage after viewing the MOMA’s Picasso’s Guitars exhibit. Of course, we ventured into cubist portraits and some printmaking as well. It was a week full of activity with a great bunch of students.

A Glimpse of Music Time

05.13.11

The spring break brought in record numbers for Wee Arts Drop-in and music time was rockin. Tom and Annie delivered some old favorites and jammed out on the drums to end the session. Thanks to all the newcomers to the program for coming down and we look forward to seeing you all again.

Haitian Children’s Festival

05.10.11

CMA celebrated the visual and performing arts of Haiti during our Haitian Children’s Festival held on February 5 & 6, 2011. The two day festival featured a painting workshop led by contemporary Haitian artist Jean Dominique, an exhibit of Haitian crafts, traditional Haitian folktales, and live drumming, dancing and singing performances by Bonga and Emmanuel Louis. The Festival was supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

CMA at Tribeca Film Family Festival Street Fair

05.02.11

This past weekend, the CMA Media Lab had the awesome opportunity to hang out at the Tribeca Film Family Festival Street Fair. You can see here a video of the claymation that the children who visited us made, as well as some photos of them sculpting clay creatures and animating.

For most people, objects are still. They sit and they collect dust. They become relics and reminders of a past time, but they also allow us to escape the present, if only momentarily. Objects become portals and through them we can emotionally experience things when it is no longer possible to physically do so. Through my work, I explore stories told and not told. I work with and manipulate textiles as a way of accessing a dimension not necessarily possible through the use of pen and paper.
