Organic Art

07.21.10

Organic Art Colony 2010! Nine girls learned about the artists Andy Goldsworthy, Isamu Noguchi, Eva Hesse, and Aselm Keifer. They created their own interpretations of organic art in paper cut, clay forms, mixed media paintings, wire and plaster, and a collaborative stacked mixed media piece. In our spare time we explored the island, created flower chains, played a variety of games (including but not limited to SPUD, Harry Potter Mafia, and running bases) and rolled down a few hills. The week ended with a very special Final Friday exhibition in CMA’s Exhibition hall on Governors Island. Click here to see more photos!

Experimental Sculpture

07.21.10

The young artists of Experimental Sculpture fearlessly tackled material, structure, form, and shape in their week-long journey through experiential thinking and making…

They played with flexibility: paper, wire mobiles, & rigid wood stick and straw constructions;
They embraced texture: in clay, found object & monochromatic assemblage;
They conceptualized ‘ordinary objects’ in plaster as well as soft sculpture…
and created their own version of Claes Oldenburg’s “The Store”!

Miniature Sculpture

07.21.10

Using a wide variety of a recycled materials and found objects, students of the Miniature Sculpture class created dioramas, shadow boxes, terrariums and more! The artists were inspired in equal measure by the environment, Governors Island, and the works Joseph Cornell, Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso.

WPA Murals: Visions of NYC

07.06.10

The WPA Murals art colony had a task to complete the second half of a seven panel mural with the theme of New York of the future. We have a girl in a bubble delivering newspapers, a groovy freedom tower building, a garden under the Brooklyn Bridge, two statue’s of Liberty, a Phoenix rising in our sky, a happy skating hamster, and more in a colorful jumble of a city we call New York! The children worked hard and enjoyed the much frolicking in the greenery of Governor’s Island. The mural will be displayed for the public in Battery Maritime Building.
