L.A. 2 is a graffiti artist from the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He collaborated with Keith Haring, one of the renowned artists in CMA’s inaugural exhibition, Make Art (In) Public, which is how we were able to make such a connection. His niece came to CMA for a school group visit and discovered L.A. 2 in a few photos from the Keith Haring installation and put him in touch with our curator, Prescott Trudeau! This happy realization resulted in a guest visit from L.A. 2 in the Fine Arts Studio. Museum visitors loved collaborating with L.A. 2 and his friends on graffiti tags. They also enjoyed watching the artists in their creating process.

A great art time was had by all!

The Cityscapes Art Colony met during the week of March 26-3oth, 2012.We created our own watercolors, observed the CMA neighborhood and sketched our surroundings. The class visited the Architectural firm, Fogarty and Finger and teaching artists, Donna and Jamie led the way to the Highline for a unique view of the New York skyline. Students experimented with 2D and 3D projects, looking to a range of artists including Romare Bearden, Red Grooms, and Swoon for inspiration. The group worked hard and their ideas spanned the gamut from whimsical to profound.

What a lovely week!

Tom’s Bio:

Since arriving in NYC in 1979, I’ve been balancing the many roles and energies of making music and performance art with my role in education. I have managed my time as a director, performer, writer, musician, and collaborator at venues such as PS 122, La Mama, and the Kitchen, with my role as a teaching artist, working with children of all ages to facilitate a sense of creative curiosity about themselves and the world around them. Whether it be my many years teaching toddlers and preschoolers or my time spent with elementary, middle and high schoolers, I have always found this balancing act between creating, presenting, teaching, and facilitating to be cross-inspirational, each fueling the other on my creative journeys. The samples of work here represent touchstones of each facet along the way.

Tom, The Performer:

In the mid to late 90′s, I was a member, co-creator, and keyboardist of a performance band called COOCOOHANDLER. Its name, taken from James Joyce’s ‘Finnegans Wake’, conjured an aesthetic which we coined as post-freudian-jazz-punk- cabaret. COOCOOHANDLER, with it’s lavish presentations was a regular fixture in the downtown performance scene, playing at venues including the Kitchen, Ps 122, Webster Hall, CBGB’s, Cucaracha, countless others, and appearing on PBS and MTV’s promotion of M2. The video here is a collection of COOCOOHANDLER moments:

On other end of the spectrum, Chimes Swing number 42 is a meditative-collaboration with video artist Annie Bonney, who at the time (late 90′s) was video curator at The Kitchen. For several years, I had been performing a solo piece at various shows, festival, and benefits. It consisted of a set of wind chimes being tied to a 12 foot rope and then being swung over my head, creating rich overtones and jumbled harmonies. Sometimes texts would be recited, sometimes projected simultaneously on 20 foot screens, sometimes under one light, sometimes accompanied by other musicians, whatever the setting dictated. This video was shot at the Kitchen and is a ‘chime swing’ in its purest form:

We played in unusual sunshine at lunch and worked as studio assistants at Misaki Kawai’s Studio downtown. We also created our own collage and assemblage pieces, as well as some mixed media puppets. The kids were so sweet, creative, and prolific. We all experimented with different materials and completed several projects with involved steps. We had many creative adventures and celebrated with a wonderful exhibition!

The inaugural Intro to Fine Arts afterschool class at our new CMA location was a prolific and creative exploration. 17 students from ages 5-7 met each Wednesday to learn about an artist and explore different art techniques related to that artist. The students explored carving, printmaking, drawing, painting, and wire sculpture. The kids were so happy, imaginative, and artistically adventurous. These photos are from our final exhibit and celebration.

In the RESTART program CMA brings multi-session free art programs for children living in transitional housing. CMA’s Teaching Artists bring art materials and workshops to the participants, ages 3-15, inviting them to explore the art of weaving, printmaking and sculpture. On December 16, 2011, CMA teaching artists invited families to join their children and come together to enjoy the art making experience in our first Family Friday event.

The teaching artists shared with the families the work of artist Chuck Close, specifically his finger print portraits. In small groups the families were encouraged to use their fingers as a printing object. Using tempera paint the families used their fingerprints to create their self-portrait or a portrait of their family member. The families joined together in this artistic process and truly enjoyed each other’s company. What a nice way to celebrate this Holiday season!

To end our series of posts about the PS 29 mural process, we present you with the final progress report: the unveiling!

The unveiling of the PS 29 mural project also celebrated the official opening of the newly renovated playground. The kids choreographed a run through the playground and handed the large scissors to the art teacher, Kristen Adamczyk and some young artists to cut the ribbon and ceremoniously unveil the mural. The chorus sang, visitors danced and school officials spoke on a glorious sunny and crisp December day. The mural is 21 panels of color, full of whimsey and brush work. Ms. Adamczyk exclaimed that it looks like candy to many cheers. This project was a true artistic collaboration!

The Kindergarten and 1st graders have been painting the border with colorful stripes to set off the 3rd-5th graders colorful and whimsical scene.Teaching artist Erin Hall has also been spending Fridays with the second graders at PS 29, mixing colors and making painterly mono prints.

The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes are learning the transformative power of art by creating a mural for the big brown wall in their playground. CMA teaching artist Jamie Kelty met with Kristen Adamczk’s art classes to talk about creating public murals and look at examples for inspiration. They all began brainstorming ideas, giving their observations of their school, neighborhood, and community. Then, the class collaborated on small paintings which were cut and collaged into a whimsical design for the 20 panel mural. The class measured out and drew the grid onto the panels with guidance from teaching artists Debbie, Alder, Kristen, and Jamie. As the mural progresses, the class will begin to paint, construct, and complete this colossal work of public art- did we mention that the mural is 640 square feet ? (That’s 20 panels at 4×8 each!)

A lone, faceless figure turns on her television. Mercilessly wielding her remote, she takes us on a seemingly unstoppable, fast-paced journey through TV Land…

The Puppet Theater TV class, the first of its kind at CMA, gave Art Colonists the opportunity to co-create a piece that combined the mediums of live puppetry and television. Teaching artists guided filmmaker/puppeteers through the process of writing a script, building puppets and sets, performing, recording and adding sound and music. The result of this intense and in depth collaboration is FLIP.

It begins like this: A coveted jewel, a heist with a twist, a bird and a primate hatch a plan on a bench in Beastown…

“Have you ever been to Beastown, with its warehouses and dark alleys, hippo gangs and wild boar thugs? You know, Beastown, where the rich pig runs the show and crime runs the streets. Yeah, Beastown, where you can’t tell the difference between the rapid beat of your heart and the crash of that crazy tiger’s snare drum.”

Enjoy this collaborative gem, created by the hard-working artists of the Animated Film Art Colony on Governors Island. This film has been unofficially dedicated to Sam Squirrel.
